Keeping your nutrient solution cool will help to maintain high amounts of dissolved oxygen keeping the good bacteria happy and the bad bacteria at bay. This is especially important when growing in bare root hydroponic systems such as DWC or NFT.
High ambient temperatures will naturally increase the temperature of your water/nutrient solution and will therefore decrease the amount of dissolved oxygen. Beneficial bacteria that populate your root zone are what you call aerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria need an environment enriched with oxygen to thrive, whereas detrimental bacteria that can cause root disease such as pythium, are anaerobic bacteria that thrive in low oxygen conditions.
The water is cooled by the chiller absorbing excess heat through a refrigerant (heat absorbent chemical which is then released into the atmosphere through a heat exchanger. With summer fast approaching, why risk the disastrous consequences of a warm nutrient solution when you can guarantee successful crops throughout the whole of summer.
