    Air Cooled Lighting

    During the summer months, maintaining consistent temperatures in your grow room can be quite a challenge. As the temperatures soar outside, it can be difficult to protect plants from the heat inside, especially with the additional heat produced by the grow lights. The most effective way to manage grow room temperatures in warmer weather is to use Air Cooled Lighting.  Warm air is extracted from the lamp area out of the grow room/tent thus reducing the impact of the heat emitted by the lamp.

    There are several advantages to using air cooled lighting in your grow room. Unlike the grow room temperature, the relative humidity is not affected when using an air cooled system (with an outside air input) which removes the heat with minimal disruption to the climate of the grow space.  They also work effectively in smaller spaces and low-height grow rooms meaning more compact grow tents cant be used to their full potential without overheating. Air cooled grow lights can be located closer to plants than standard lamps so your plant still receives maximum intensity but at a cooler temperature therefore reducing the risks such as burning or low humidity in a smaller space.

    Barnsley has gone bananas!

    IMG_0960Over at our Green spirit  store in Barnsley, things have become slightly tropical!

    These trees were originally donated at around 2ft tall each after a cold winter and were in very poor health.

    We replanted the banana trees in gold label light mix medium and treated them at various stages with growers ark one part grow , bud blood , calmag from botanicare and aussie tonic from green planet wholesale.

    IMG_0961They were situated under the maxibright digilight pro max 400 volts using philips 400v green power bulbs. As you can see, the banana trees are very well established and boast thick, healthy stalks and leaves.

    Temperature Control

    Summer is here, and with it comes the hotter days. As a grower, dealing with these hot temperatures in the grow room can be an ongoing battle that is a hard one to win. These hot temperatures will cause an increase in water and air temperatures which can both be extremely detrimental to plant growth and development.

    When growing in soilless hydroponic systems water temperature is just as important as the temperature of the rest of your room. When the temperature of the nutrient solution in your system is too low, plants will struggle to uptake and processes will slow to a halt. Too high a temperature decreases the oxygen content within the water, and creates an ideal environment for anaerobic organisms to thrive such as Pythium that cause root rot, disease and in worst case scenarios will kill your plants. Using a water chiller to cool your nutrient solution will prevent the loss of oxygen and will stave off the harmful organisms. Optimal water temperature is around 18 Celsius, anymore than this the oxygen content will start to decrease to levels that can be hazardous.

    When it comes to maintaining good air temperature within your grow room, air conditioning units are the most effective way to create source of cold air. On the other hand they are not cheap to purchase or to run, and also create a large amount of excess heat that needs to be deposited away from your grow area.

    Grow room pests?? Prevention is better than the cure!

    Preventing bugs from entering your grow room is essential to maintain healthy plants. Especially during the summer months, when there are more and more insects, it is essential to protect your crop. The most vulnerable entrance for a grow room is the air intake system, because plants need a reasonable amount of fresh air, there has to be an opening to introduce this ventilation. Because some insects are really small, they can access most crevices with ease or they can get drawn in through the fan. The simplest method of blocking these pests is the Bug barrier. This simple accessory is composed of a super fine mesh which prevents insects (and dust particles) from entering the fan/grow room without greatly impacting the air flow. Attaching the Bug Barrier to the end of your intake ducting is very straightforward, they’re available in several sizes to accommodate your inline fan system and feature a velcro fixing system for a secure fit.

    The bug barrier is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly technique to keep your Grow room bug-free!!

    Additional bug prevention can be obtained by using the new Shield range of products. The diffuser produces aromas which repel the insects or additionally the sulphur vaporiser exterminates any pests which may have inhabited your plants.

    Humidity and your Grow room

    The quantity of water vapour in the air is called humidity and it is measured as a percentage.

    Humidity is a significant factor for a healthy grow room.

    The lower the humidity, the higher the evaporation pressure and the more water and nutrients your plant can absorb. However, if the evaporation pressure becomes too high, the plant will close it’s stomata to protect itself against dehydration. Consequently the plant won’t be able to absorb water anymore, and the growth will stagnate.

    More humidity is required during the initial growth period than blooming period due to the younger roots being smaller. An advisable level of humidity for vegetative growth would be approximately 70% at 22 to 26 celcius. During the bloom period plants prefer the same humidity levels as in vegetative growth, although this high humidity can result in water accumulating on the plants and causing mould and rot. For this reason, it is advisable to lower the humidity in your grow room once clusters of flowers have formed. If high humidity is unavoidable, good air movement within your grow space will help to prevent moisture from being trapped. (link to floor circulator and pedestal fans)

    A hygrometer is an instrument used for measuring humidity. There are various hygrometers but our favourite is the Digital thermometer/hygrometer. These can be hung above the plants in a clear area which is well ventilated.

    The temperature of an area directly influences it’s humidity. The air is drier in the winter due to the cold temperatures but more moist in the warmer months of the summer.

    Blooming phase

    During this period, it is important your plants have the best environment for flowering. It needs good air flow so good ventilation/air movement is necessary.  In contrast to the previous growth stages, the flowering period requires a lower humidity so maybe consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the water vapour in your grow room. Monitor temperatures the same as throughout growth.  The lighting for this stage should be 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark to simulate Autumn which will speed up the process.

    Using Nutrients during this time can also give your plants the boost they need and produce larger, heavier, healthier flowers in a shorter time.  A fantastic product is Green Planet Finisher which delivers the essential components for flowering such as  organic enzyme activators, vitamins, L-Form amino acids, fulvic acid, triacontanol and both simple and complex carbohydrates.

    In conclusion, the blooming phase is a vital stage of the growth cycle which requires care and attention and should not be overlooked.

    Grow Room Update November

    Welcome to the November grow diary update. Up to this point we've had a fairly warm autumn round these parts, but now the cold really is starting to set in. Growing inside allows you to avoid that tricky problem though!

    We started off a new batch of cherry tomato plants during the last week, so they're still in the germination phase. In fact, there's only one poking through the soil at the moment, as you can see below (if you've got good eyesight).
    The variety is called Tumbling Tom, and it's a shrub-type tomato meaning it grows in a small bush-type shape rather than upwards and tall. This makes it ideal for hanging baskets and containers and it looks quite full and impressive when in flower. It also means it doesn't need pruning, so it's generally quite a hassle-free plant - nice and simple!
    The above photo shows the seeds planted in Jiffy Peat Propagation Plugs. Just by soaking the plug in water and then popping the seed inside you're providing the plant with all the nutrition it needs at this early stage. These ones will be transferred to soil or coco when they're ready.

    Grow Room Update October

    1Here are some of our chilli plants (two Peach Ghost Scorpions and four Naga Jolokia) which we recently re-potted into bigger pots full of coco. The three on the right have also been potted in with Ecothrive's Charge frass  which should create a larger mycorrhizal network leading to a better uptake of nutrients and ultimately a healthier, larger plant. We'll come back to these in a few weeks and compare the results, and we also have a video to upload to our YouTube channel  very soon showing this re-potting process and explaining the benefits of Charge.

    ROOT TO SUCCESS - Step by Step Guide to Cloning your favourite plants

    Taking cuttings is one of the most rewarding and in a lot of cases the easiest activity you can do in the grow room.

    The ability to create multiple plants from one single variety is an incredibly useful tool to either preserve genetics or create large numbers of plants, all of the exact same genetic material. 

    Cultivating clones of the same variety (mono-crop) is the best way to generate high yields with the greatest ease. As the plants you have created are all from the same genetic material they will all have the same preferences in regards to environment, nutrition and pH levels, as well as all having the same structure and height. Growing plants from seed is always exciting. 

    Seeing, smelling and feeling the differences between each plant is very interesting but as plants vary in appearance so do their environmental and nutritional preferences. Growing for yield from seed is a challenging task as it is much of a guessing game to give your plants exactly what they require as every plant will have different preferences.

    Pictured below are cuttings taken from a Lemon Scented Geranium. These plants do not require a propagator like most other plants that have glabrous (smooth, not hairy) leaf surfaces. Geranium plants have a fine covering of short erect hairs that trap moisture around the leaf surface that minimises water loss through transpiration. Plants that have a glabrous leaf surface require a propagator to create a humid environment to minimise water loss and prevent wilting.
