Adding these chips to fine coco-based mediums will reduce the water holding capacity of the medium as well as increasing the air filled porosity. The reduction in water holding capacity and the increase in air filled porosity makes it much easier to control your irrigation when growing in a hydroponic system.
VitaLink Professional Coir Chips can also be used as a mulch to protect the surface of your growing media from dehydration as well as soil-dwelling pests and algae (which can cause even more pest related problems). VitaLink Professional Coir Chips also contain a naturally occurring fungus: Trichoderma. This fungus inhibits the development of pathogenic fungal growth which can be harmful to your plants.
