Making sure the water in your hydroponic system is at a certain temperature can mean the difference between freezing and dead roots, and healthy cosy roots. Indoor grow rooms are usually put in places that are out of the way, so that they do not interfere with general house operation. The problem with this, is that if it's in the basement it can usually be too cold down there, and if it's in the loft it can be too cold as well. The last thing you want in your growing room is for your plants to have freezing cold water fed to them. So a cheap water heater is a good investment for your hydroponic garden.

Plants grown in a hydroponic garden get their nutrients from a solution instead of through soil like plants that are grown in typical gardens. The nutrient solution for a hydroponic garden needs to be kept between sixty five and seventy five degrees Fahrenheit in order to maximize the absorption of the nutrients by the plants.  In most hydroponic gardens, it is necessary to use a water heater to keep the temperature in the proper zone.

However, regular water heaters are not built to be used in hydroponic gardens. They will wear out very quickly due to calcification from the high mineral content of the nutrient solution. Instead, specially constructed hydroponic heaters for water should be used to keep the nutrient solution within the proper temperature range for maximum absorption.
