Coconut husks are a fantastic medium to grow your plants in, and the best thing is that they're 100% organic and good for the environment. They replace the usual peat bricks that people use in planting, and peat is a slowly dwindling resource. Coconut husks are cheap, and a lightweight medium that can be used in your grow room from seed to clone. Depending on the length of the fibers, they provide a fantastic amount of airation for your plants, and the medium itself can be used over and over again for up to ten years.

Coco For Hydroponics

Coco coir is one of the newer hydroponics grow media and it comes from the fibrous husks of harvested coconuts. The hydroponics coco is sold in several ways aside from coco growing soil.  One, which is referred to as coco mix, contains both fine coco coir and larger chips of coco coir. The addition of the larger chips helps keep the media very lose and allows the roots to spread easier.

Another way that suppliers sell coco coir is in the form of coco peat, which often looks like compressed discs, small bricks, or other shapes. The user simply soaks one of them in water and it will expand to the perfect size for propagation or planting. The biodegradable planters called coco pots are also made from coconut husks.   These planters do not contain any nutrients and survival of the plants depends on hydroponic coco nutrients that have to be added to nourish them.
