Just like in the garden, crops, herbs and vegetables usually need some good old fashioned soil to spread their busy little roots. Hydroponic growing media, or medium as it's often termed, is not expensive and is for sale in large bags for short to medium term usage. Look out for the popular hydroponic soil replacements such as Rockwool and Coco soil mix. Related closely to grow media are the various nutrients and additives needed for hydroponics.

Although soil isn't necessary for the plants to grow, it is still important to keep them in some kind of medium. This will benefit you hydroponics system as the nutrients and water will last much longer in the soil-substitue than they would if you were growing the plants without a substitute.

There is also an aesthetic factor to using a hydroponic growing medium. Sometimes home hydroponics set-ups can look a little messy, especially if you are using things like hydroponic humidifiers, but a soil-substitute makes the plant look more pleasant and more at home; just as if it were in soil in the garden.
