Ballasts

To power high power rated fluorescent bulbs, you need a ballast. Ballasts change the power from the mains into exactly the right rating for your hydroponic bulbs. It is also a critical safety point for fluorescent lights, as it makes sure that the light is constantly providing the right amount of power, and never any more so that it doesn't damage your equipment.

Hydroponic Lighting Ballasts

Most UV lighting comes from the sun and it is essential for the growth of plants.  It can be supplied by fluorescent lights for those plants that are grown indoors. In order for fluorescent lighting to work properly, a fluorescent light ballast is needed.

The light ballast is what gives the initial electrical charge to light the fluorescent bulb and then it keeps the bulb running at the proper level so that it does not burn out too quickly.  There are different types of lighting ballast for various types of home and commercial lighting, so it is important that only a hydroponic ballast is purchased for an indoor growing room.

The grow light ballast is capable of regulating between metal halide and high pressure sodium lights in order to maximize all stages of plant growth.  This type of lighting ballast can be purchased as part of a kit or separately.
